Why Quandongs are the natural skincare alternative to Alpha Hydroxy Acid
Looking for firm hydrated and glowing skin without ingredients made in a lab?
Quandong, the Australian super fruit, with its phenolic acids provides similar benefits to Alpha Hydroxy Acids - gently exfoliating and rejuvenating the skin.
This edible red peach is pronounced “Kwondong” might be a new product for many of us, but they have been used for centuries by various Indigenous Australian tribes. If you have heard of quandongs you may have associated them more with the edible fruit – often used in bush recipes such as jams and pies.
The humble little quandong’s popularity is booming as word is getting out about its amazing healing properties and nutritional value. Often referred to by its traditional Aboriginal name – ‘Goorti’ (Nurungga), or ‘Native Peach’, the Quandong is now being hailed as a wonder active in the cosmetics industry.
What is a Quandong?
The quandong whose Latin name is “santalum acuminatum” is a wild bush peach that is part of the Sandalwood family. It is native to desert regions of central and southern Australia.
Quandongs were a staple food for the Pitjantjatjara people for over 50,000 years. They ate the fruit and used the leaves and bark for medicinal purposes. They harvested and dried the fruit and used the crushed kernels as an alternative for meat. The kernels are 25% protein and 70% complex oils which they also used to make hair conditioning oil.
5 Benefits of Quandong in Skincare
- Antioxidants
Quandongs are the second highest antioxidant fruit ever measured. The highest is the Kakadu plum (another core ingredient in Kadee Botanicals products).
Antioxidants are important for skincare because they fight free radicals, the unstable chemical particles which cause skin damage.
- Vitamin C
Quandongs contains twice the vitamin C of oranges. Vitamin C is essential for the growth of healthy skin, proven to help heal many skin conditions and protect skin from damage. It’s a natural antihistamine, which helps reduce the itching caused by skin conditions such as eczema.
- Rutin
Quandongs are high in Rutin which is a strong antioxidant and intensifies its antioxidant power when combined with Vitamin C. Rutin is also a great anti-inflammatory, ideal for sensitive skin and shown to strengthen skin capillaries and reduce blood pooling in the delicate under eye area - reducing dark circles and puffiness.
- Vitamin E and minerals
Quandongs are a rich source of Vitamin E, folate, magnesium and calcium. Vitamin E is a powerful nutrient which protects your skin by fighting free radicals, helping shield against the elements, reduces inflammation and provides excellent skin hydration.
- Phenolic acids
Quandong extract contains phenolic acids which give the skin anti-microbial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Phenolic acids work on the skin similar to a gentle alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) which exfoliate the uppermost layers of skin revealing fresher, refined skin that appears much smoother, is more hydrated and over time, becomes visibly firmer.
Quandong’s high levels of antioxidants, Vitamin C, Rutin and Phenolic Acids make it perfect for skincare as it nourishes, protects and soothes your skin and so rarely irritates, that it’s also used in products created solely for infants. When used in conjunction with Kakadu Plum and Lilly Pilly, maximum skincare benefits can be achieved.
